To support a renewed partnership with the region, the EU has worked on a three-track approach to reinvigorate the enlargement process and to rebuild trust in the region towards the EU.

Adopting a new enlargement methodology

On the basis of the new methodology proposing the opening of accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia

Adopting a major Economic and Investment Plan
The EIP will support the post-pandemic socio economic recovery, the EU recovery plan for the region and to speed up the closing of the development gap with the EU, speed up the social and economic convergence. The Plan and its 10 flagship initiatives will speed up this process, as the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Mr. Olivér Várhelyi, stated last February the 22nd, 2022 at the EBRD Western Balkans Investment Summit.
The Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) is the primary financial vehicle for implementing the EU’s ambitious Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans policy priorities and investment flagships.
As part of the EIP to support the region, the Commission presented guidelines for implementing the Green Agenda in the Western Balkans, which foresees actions around five pillars.
